ok, on the recommendation of a friend i finally watched the movie saved. it's received a lot of criticism in many christian circles. i thought it was a great satire. well done for a teen flick and in many ways, eerily accurate. made me think...
what did you think about it? (this should be obvious, but keep your trap shut if you haven't watched it)

palletjack, i watched the director and writer's commentary on the movie (i have loads of free time right now...) and they pointed out that it is never stated that the ones being shown as the "good guys" have no faith, or that the "bad guys" faith is not genuine or valid. by the end of the movie, most of the characters are shown to express faith in God in some form. from the troublemaking girl who befriends the pregnant one whispering a prayer in her car to the mandy more character coming face to face with jesus when the wooden head falls on her van at the end and she realizes she had been wrong. it's more an inditement of fundamentalist legalism than christianity as a whole. the boyfriend (skateboarder) never changes his faith throughout the movie...he just refuses to make blatant judgments of people. (remember he was a missionary and all that)
anyway, that comes out of listening to the director and writer and some other guy talking through the movie and giving their reasons behind things. they actually didn't seem anti-christianity at all, but rather trying to make a statement about love and non-judgmental acceptance of people while portraying honest characters in the teen flick genre.
i liked the movie even more after listening to them talk it through.

I liked Saved, the performances were good, the humor/satire was great, and as you say, not far off the mark. I found, however, that it kinda shot itself in the foot with its afterschool special ending. Not terribly, and I think it deserved some sort of "good" ending, but it felt a bit contrived is all.
Also, Mandy Moore is a surprisingly good actress. Culkin also did a reasonable job, though I didn't think he was great.
Brando, On your recommendation I bought the movie because I'm always looking at something to challenge what I believe. Questions and wrestling with issues I think are some of the best things we can do. It helps us understand what we believe adn shows us the retarded things that we believe that aren't of God. Anyhow, I just finished watching it with Jeremy McNally and I'm processing things now. It takes on a whole new aspect when you watch it and put it into the cultural context in which I am in right now. I'm going to post my thoughts on my blog tomorrow. Thanks for the suggestion.
