here's a question sparked by the lastest post on the silver platter. does tim horton's (or whatever coffee place you frequent) use fair trade coffee? if not, should we as responsible global citizens boycott until they do?

the hardest thing is being informed and alert, to me.
i wrote tim hortons asking what they have done about this issue. this was their reply. i thought it was pretty good. seems like they are aware and seeking to do something about it.

Dear Mr. Shillington,
Thank you for your e-mail regarding Fair Trade Coffee.
Coffee is a very large part of what Tim Hortons is all about. Accordingly,
we are constantly looking for quality coffee suitable for our blend and
that search has included examining organic and fair trade coffee. We have
always paid a premium for the coffee used in our blend; but unfortunately,
because we offer only one blend of coffee at our 2400 locations, we have
been unable to identify a source of supply that can provide us with a
sufficient quantity of organic or fair trade coffee that is of the high
quality required to meet the exacting specifications of our blend.
Like the fair trade & organic coffee suppliers, we are very anxious to deal
with the economic crisis facing the coffee farmers in Central and South
America. Accordingly, we make every effort to source our coffee from
producers who are doing the “right thing” for the people who work on their
farms i.e. provide suitable housing, provide schooling for the children,
provide playing fields for the children and provide a place to worship.
Coffee producers who do these things really are producing “fair trade
coffee” even if they don’t receive the official designation. In addition,
we are currently investigating how we can partner with exporters and
producers at origin in programs that will improve the standard of living of
the people in the fields who work so hard to provide us with the quality
coffee for which our customers have such a passion.
The Tim Horton Children’s Foundation has over the years benefited thousands
of monetarily underprivileged children in Canada and the U.S.A. It is that
standard of caring which we hope to extend to the people of the countries
where we buy our coffee.
